Mahi mahi fishing in the Riviera Maya is at its best in spring and early summer, when schools of these bright green and gold fish show up along the weed lines in the blue water just 15 minutes from Puerto Aventuras Marina. A private mahi mahi fishing charter starts at $450 for the whole boat for 3 hours, with tackle, bait, licences and an English-speaking crew included.

This guide covers when mahi mahi bite off this coast, how the crew finds and catches them, why they're one of the best fish you can eat, what a charter costs in 2026, and which boat and trip length give you the best shot.

Quick answer: the best months for mahi mahi here are April to July, with May and June the peak. Our fishing calendar rates them excellent in May and June, good in April and July, and rare from late summer through winter. Coming at another time of year? The same trip targets wahoo, tuna, kingfish and barracuda instead.

Mahi mahi, dorado or dolphinfish?

They're all the same fish. "Mahi mahi" is the Hawaiian name and the one you'll see on menus. In Mexico the crew calls it dorado, which means golden, and in Florida it's often called dolphin or dolphinfish. It has no relation to the mammal, so nobody is catching Flipper.

Mahi are one of the most beautiful fish in the ocean. In the water they glow electric blue and green, and when they come aboard they flash gold and yellow. Big males, called bulls, have a tall, square forehead. Females, called cows, have a rounder head. Younger fish travel in schools, which is where the fun starts.

Acrobatic

Mahi jump, tail walk and change direction fast. Kids and first timers love them.

Often in schools

Find one and there are usually more. Multiple hookups at once are common.

Fantastic eating

Mild, sweet white meat that's perfect for ceviche on board or the grill that night.

When is mahi mahi season in the Riviera Maya?

Mahi mahi are a spring and early summer fish on this part of the Caribbean coast. They start to appear in March, build through April and are at their best in May and June, the same window as the sailfish and marlin peak. July is still good. From August through the winter they become rare, and the crew switches focus to other species.

That timing lines up nicely with a lot of spring break, Easter and early summer trips. If you're traveling in May or June, a 4 or 6 hour trip gives you a very real chance at mahi plus a shot at a billfish on the same day. Read our marlin and sailfish guide if you'd like to chase both.

Visiting in fall or winter? There's still plenty to catch. Wahoo, tuna and kingfish are good all year, barracuda are excellent every month, and amberjack and bonito are at their best from October through the winter. For what's biting this week, see the latest reports on the Fishing Info page.

How the crew finds and catches mahi mahi

You don't need any experience. The captain and mate do the searching, rigging and spotting, then hand you the rod when a fish is on. Here's how a typical mahi mahi fishing trip works:

Expect a fast, colorful fight with plenty of jumps. Keep the rod tip up, keep steady pressure and let the mate handle the fish at the boat. All tackle and bait come with every charter, so there's nothing to buy or pack.

Eating your mahi mahi

Mahi mahi is one of the best fish in the ocean for the table: firm, mild and slightly sweet. They also grow fast and have short lives, which makes them a good choice for keeping a few for dinner.

On board, the crew makes fresh ceviche and guacamole with the catch of the day, and nothing beats mahi ceviche eaten an hour after the fish came out of the water. Your keepers are cleaned and bagged to take home, and for a small fee some marina restaurants will cook your fish for you. If you're staying in a rental with a kitchen, mahi on the grill with lime and garlic is hard to beat. Billfish are always released.

Frequently asked questions

When is mahi mahi season in the Riviera Maya?

April to July, with May and June the peak. They start showing in March and are rare from August through winter, when the crew targets wahoo, tuna, kingfish and barracuda instead.

Is mahi mahi the same as dorado?

Yes. Mahi mahi, dorado and dolphinfish are all the same fish. In Mexico the crew calls it dorado. It's not related to dolphins.

How much is a mahi mahi fishing charter?

Private charters start at $450 for the whole boat for 3 hours on the 32' Blackfin (up to 6 guests), plus a $15 per person dock fee. Licences, tackle and bait are included.

How far offshore are the mahi mahi?

Not far. The blue water where mahi feed is about 15 minutes from Puerto Aventuras Marina, so most of your trip is spent fishing, not traveling.

Can I keep and eat the mahi mahi I catch?

Yes. The crew makes fresh ceviche on board with the catch of the day, and your keepers are cleaned and bagged. Some marina restaurants will cook your fish for a small fee.

How many hours should I book for mahi mahi?

4 hours suits most families. In May and June, 6 hours gives you more time to find a school and a real shot at sailfish or marlin too.

Is mahi mahi fishing good for kids?

Very. Mahi jump, bite in schools and are close to the dock, and the crew handles all the rigging. A private 4 hour trip suits most children well.
