Yes, you can go marlin fishing from Cancún, and the best way to do it is a private charter out of Puerto Aventuras Marina, about an hour south of the hotel zone, where deep blue water starts roughly 15 minutes from the dock. Blue marlin, white marlin and sailfish all peak in May and June, and a private 6 hour billfish trip starts at $750 for the whole boat.
This guide covers which billfish you can catch near Cancún, when marlin season really is, how a billfish day works on the boat, what it costs in 2026, and how to give yourself the best shot at a fish you'll talk about for years.
Quick heads up: our boats leave from Puerto Aventuras Marina, off Highway 307 between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, not from Cancún itself. It's about 60 to 75 minutes from the Cancún hotel zone. Every sailfish and marlin is released after photos, so your catch swims away to fight another day.
What billfish can you catch near Cancún?
The Mexican Caribbean sits right on the path of warm blue water that billfish follow, and the reef off the Riviera Maya drops into deep water very close to shore. That's why marlin fishing near Cancún is so good: the fish come close, and you don't spend half your day running offshore.
Sailfish
The signature billfish of the Riviera Maya and the one you're most likely to hook. Famous for jumping and tail-walking across the surface, with that big blue sail lit up beside the boat.
Blue marlin
The heavyweight. Blue marlin are the biggest fish in these waters and the hardest fight you can have on a rod. Landing one is a true bucket list moment for any angler.
White marlin
Smaller than the blues but fast, acrobatic and a real test of skill. Whites often show up in the same water as sailfish during the spring run.
The same blue water holds plenty of other fish too, so billfish days often add mahi mahi, tuna, wahoo and kingfish to the box. Those are the fish you can keep for dinner, and the crew will turn your first one into fresh ceviche on the ride.
When is marlin season in Cancún?
Billfish are around for a good part of the year, but there's a clear peak. Here's the simple version:
- May and June are the best months. Sailfish, blue marlin, white marlin and mahi mahi all peak at the same time, which is why these dates book out first.
- April and July are good too. The run is building in April and still going strong into July, and sailfish often hang around into August.
- Fall and winter are a different game. From around October to January billfish are rare, so the crew focuses on wahoo, tuna, kingfish and amberjack, which are excellent in the cooler months.
For species by month, check our fishing calendar on the Fishing Info page. If your trip falls outside billfish season, our guide to deep sea fishing in the Riviera Maya covers what's biting the rest of the year.
Why marlin trips from Cancún leave from Puerto Aventuras
Cancún has a big, friendly charter fleet of its own, and plenty of good crews fish out of the hotel zone. If you'd rather stay close to your hotel, those are a fine choice.
A lot of Cancún visitors still make the trip south for a billfish day, for three reasons:
- Blue water, fast. From Puerto Aventuras you're trolling in deep water about 15 minutes after leaving the dock, so more of your paid hours go to actually fishing for marlin.
- 100% private. Every trip is a private charter. No strangers, no shared rail, and the rods are all yours when a sailfish comes up.
- A crew that knows the water. Our English-speaking captains and mates grew up fishing this coast, and we're a 2026 Tripadvisor Travelers' Choice winner.
Getting there: private roundtrip transport in air-conditioned vans is available from Playa del Carmen ($160), Tulum ($180) and Puerto Morelos ($200) for up to 6 guests. From the Cancún hotel zone, ask about transport when you book. If you have a rental car, the drive down Highway 307 is easy. Our guide to fishing in Cancún has more on planning the trip down.
How a billfish trip works
Marlin and sailfish fishing is mostly trolling: the boat moves slowly along the edge of the blue water pulling a spread of rigged baits and lures, with teasers splashing close behind the boat to bring fish up.
- The bite. When a billfish shows up in the spread, the mate shouts, and the action happens fast. He'll feed the fish a bait, set the hook and hand you the rod.
- The fight. Sailfish usually take 10 to 30 minutes, with plenty of jumps. A big blue marlin can take much longer. The captain works the boat so you can gain line, and the mate coaches you the whole way.
- The release. Once the fish is beside the boat, you get your photos, then it goes back in the water. The crew handles the fish carefully so it swims off strong.
No experience is needed. Our crews have helped plenty of first-timers and kids land their first sailfish, and they'll show you exactly what to do before anything happens.
Marlin fishing charter prices for 2026
All prices are for the whole private boat, not per person:
| Boat (guests) | 4 hrs | 6 hrs | 8 hrs |
|---|---|---|---|
| 32' Blackfin up to 6 | $550 | $750 | $1,000 |
| 38' Luhrs Express up to 10 | $750 | $1,050 | $1,150 |
| 45' Viking Express up to 15 | $880 | $1,150 | $1,450 |
3 hour trips are also available from $450, but for marlin and sailfish we recommend at least 6 hours. There's a $15 per person dock fee, and fishing licences are included. A 30% deposit holds your date, and it's refunded in full if the weather cancels your trip.
Split between six anglers, an 8 hour billfish day on the 32' Blackfin works out to about $167 each, plus the dock fee. See every boat in detail on our fishing boats page.
Which boat and how many hours?
6 hours: the sweet spot
Enough time for the captain to find the fish and move if the first stretch of water is quiet. The right call for most billfish trips.
8 hours: best odds
A full day on the water. If landing a marlin is the whole reason for the trip, this gives you the most chances at a bite.
4 hours: a mixed day
Great for families who want a fun morning of fishing. You might raise a sailfish in season, but it's less likely than on a longer trip.
For the boat, pick by group size and comfort. The 32' Blackfin is a tough, classic sportfisher for up to 6. The 38' Luhrs Express has a wide, stable deck for up to 10. The 45' Viking Express takes up to 15, with a big cockpit and a flybridge, and it's the favorite for long billfish days.

Tips for your best shot at a marlin
- Book May and June early. Peak season dates fill up first, especially weekends and the bigger boats.
- Go longer. More hours means more water covered and more chances at a bite.
- Stay flexible. If the wind is up, the crew may suggest a different day. Moving your date is better than fishing rough water.
- Listen to the mate. When a billfish comes up, things happen fast. Follow his lead and you'll hook more fish.
- Pack smart. Hat, polarized sunglasses, reef-safe sunscreen and something for seasickness if you need it. Everything else is on board.
- Have a camera ready. Billfish are released quickly, so have your phone handy for the boatside photo.
