Snapper fishing in the Riviera Maya happens right on the reef: the boat drops baited lines over coral and rocky structure a few minutes from Puerto Aventuras Marina, and yellowtail and mutton snapper bite all year. A private charter starts at $450 for the whole boat for 3 hours, with an English-speaking crew, tackle, bait and licences included.

This guide covers the snapper you can catch off this coast, how bottom fishing works on a private boat, why it's one of the best trips for kids, what to do with your catch, what a snapper fishing charter costs in 2026, and how to plan the day.

Quick answer: our Fishing Info page rates yellowtail snapper excellent from October through March and good the rest of the year, and mutton snapper good every month. Bottom fishing works on any trip length, and a 4 hour charter lets you mix reef fishing with some trolling or a snorkel stop.

The snapper you'll catch off the Riviera Maya

The Mesoamerican Reef runs right along this stretch of coast, and its ledges, coral heads and sandy patches are home to some of the best eating fish in the Caribbean. These are the regulars on a bottom fishing trip:

Yellowtail snapper

The classic reef snapper, with a bright yellow stripe down the side and a deeply forked yellow tail. Usually 1 to 3 pounds, often caught in numbers, and a favorite with kids because the bites keep coming.

Mutton snapper

The bigger prize. Olive to pinkish red with a small black spot near the tail, and strong enough to pull hard toward the reef. A good one can top 10 pounds.

Grouper and friends

The same reef holds grouper, triggerfish and, in the cooler months, amberjack. You never quite know what the next bite will be.

Snapper are smart fish. They hang close to the structure, nibble at baits and dive for cover the moment they feel the hook. That makes them a fun challenge for experienced anglers and a great first fish for beginners, since the crew does the hard part of finding them.

How snapper fishing works on a private charter

No experience is needed. The captain picks the spot and the mate rigs the rods and shows everyone what to do. Here's how a typical bottom fishing session goes:

Because the boat stays close to the reef, the water is usually calmer than out in the deep blue, and the action is steady. All rods, reels, tackle and bait come with every charter, so there's nothing to buy or pack.

Why snapper fishing is great for families

If you're fishing with kids, first timers or anyone who gets a little nervous on the open ocean, bottom fishing is hard to beat. The private charters are set up for families with small children, and here's why the reef works so well:

Want something with a bit more speed too? Many groups spend part of the trip trolling for barracuda, kingfish or tuna, then finish on the reef. Just tell the crew what you'd like when you book and they'll plan the day around it.

Eating your snapper

Snapper is some of the best eating fish in the Caribbean: white, mild and flaky. It's the fish many Riviera Maya restaurants serve grilled whole or as tikin xic, the local achiote-marinated favorite.

On board, the crew makes fresh ceviche and guacamole with the catch of the day, and snapper ceviche is hard to beat. You can keep your fish, release it or give it to the crew. Keepers are filleted and packed on ice when you get back, and there are local spots around the marina, within walking distance of the boats, that will cook your catch for you.
